Default What can i use instead of baking powder in a recipe?

I want to make waffles, but in the recipe it says to use baking powder...What can I use instead of baking powder? Is baking soda ok?Cooks.com - Recipe - Charles' Pancakes From Scratch, would i have to have the milk, or would water be ok? the only milk we have is like...OLD, and in a container that wasn't covered, and it's gonna be tossed outI don't have anything like cream of tartar, lemon juice... ------
